ERR_URL_WEB_PAGE β URL Is a Web Page
HTTP Status: 400 Retryable: No Automatic retry: None. The same URL returns the same page.
What the User Sees
A warning toast: βThis link is a web page, not a document. Gevell PDF converts a PDF, Word (.docx), image (PNG, JPG, GIF, TIFF, WebP), or audio (MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC) file.β The next step depends on the page:
- VPAT/ACR page: points to Gevell Report Card (acr.gevell.com).
- Any other page: points to Gevell Audit (audit.gevell.com), or suggests saving the page as a PDF.
- Page links PDFs: names up to three of them by link text and says how many there are.
- Non-public cloud share (
details.viewerHostis set): tells the user to set sharing to βAnyone with the linkβ.
What Causes This Error
βConvert from URLβ (POST /api/files/from-url, services/url-import.ts) detects the file type from the downloaded bytes (#3740). The bytes were HTML, and the page doesnβt declare its own PDF version.
A pageβs PDF is followed automatically only when:
- the page declares it with
<link rel="alternate" type="application/pdf">, or - a linked PDF on the same host has the same basename as the page, and is either in the same directory or its link text says PDF/download.
Any other PDF link is only listed, never followed, because following it could spend the userβs credits on a document they didnβt ask for.
Google Drive, Google Docs, Dropbox (/s/, /scl/, /sh/) and SharePoint (/:x:/) share links are first rewritten to their direct-download form. If HTML still comes back, the share isnβt public.
details carries pageTitle, pdfLinks (up to 5), pdfLinkCount, looksLikeAcr and, for share links, viewerHost.
Resolution Steps
For Users
- Paste a direct link to the document, not the page it appears on.
- For a VPAT or ACR page, use Gevell Report Card. It evaluates the page straight from the link.
- To convert the page itself, save it as a PDF from the browser (Print β Save as PDF) and upload that file.
- For a cloud share, set sharing to βAnyone with the linkβ, or download the file and upload it directly.
For Administrators
- No admin action is needed. This is a warning-severity user-input error.
- If a real document host always returns HTML for direct links, check the raw response. It may need a viewer-URL rewrite rule in
utils/viewer-url.ts.
